Boston Celtics vs Detroit Pistons prediction: Jalen Duren and Detroit's paint attack test Boston's rebuilt interior
Last season's top paint-scoring team opens at home against last season's stingiest paint defense, and Boston has a new center, no Jaylen Brown and a 1.5-point edge.
| Spread | Boston Celtics -1.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 220.5 |
- Expect a grinding, possession-by-possession opener: Detroit attacks the rim and hunts turnovers while Boston fires threes and protects the ball.
- Jalen Duren against Boston's new center rotation of Neemias Queta and Mitchell Robinson decides whether Detroit's paint attack works.
- Boston is a 1.5-point road favorite with a 220.5 total, both unchanged since our feed first saw the game; Boston went 42-23 to the under last season.
Detroit lives in the paint
The opener starts with the sharpest style clash on the board. Last season Detroit scored 57.9 points in the paint per game, 1st in the league. Boston allowed just 40.1, also 1st. One of those identities gives way at Little Caesars Arena.
Jalen Duren is the reason Detroit's number was so high. He averaged 19.5 points on 65.0% shooting last season and re-signed this summer. Boston answers with a reshuffled frontcourt. Nikola Vucevic is in Orlando, and Neemias Queta (8.4 rebounds a game last season) now shares the middle with Mitchell Robinson, who shot 72.3% for the Knicks. Robinson was in Boston's preseason starting five, though the opening lineup hasn't been confirmed.
Boston without Jaylen Brown
This is Boston's first opener without Brown since 2015. He averaged 28.7 points last season and now plays for Philadelphia, and Boston returns 65.2% of last season's scoring. Jayson Tatum carries no injury designation and is expected to play.
Paul George, Robinson and Mike Conley make their Celtics debuts. George averaged 17.3 points for the 76ers last season but appeared in only 37 games. Derrick White remains the engine, though his 16.5 points came with 32.7% shooting from three. Devin Carter is out with mononucleosis, and ESPN estimates a Nov. 8 return.
Threes into a wall
Boston shot plenty of threes last season: 46.7% of its shots came from deep, 4th-most in the league. That runs straight into the defense that allowed the lowest 3-point percentage in the league, 34.5%.
Detroit took the second-fewest threes and spent the summer fixing that. Isaiah Joe arrives from Oklahoma City after shooting 42.3% from deep, and John Collins hit 40.6% for the Clippers. Taurean Prince, another shooter, is out for personal reasons.
Turnovers and the whistle
Detroit's defense feeds on mistakes. Last season it forced turnovers on 16.4% of opponent possessions, best in the league, and led the league in steal rate. Boston rarely obliged, with a turnover rate of 12.6%, 2nd-lowest in the league. Every live-ball miss Boston avoids takes away the fast breaks Detroit thrives on.
The free throw line sets up a quieter tension. Detroit put opponents on the line more often than anyone, but Boston ranked 30th in free throw rate (free throws per field goal attempt). Boston rarely draws fouls, so Detroit can afford to play physical.
Market and the season series
Boston opens as a 1.5-point road favorite, with Detroit at +102 on the moneyline. That is a mild vote of confidence in Boston after Detroit won last season's series 3-1, including both games in Detroit. The most recent meeting, on Jan. 19, ended 104-103.
The 220.5 total hasn't moved. Boston played at the league's slowest pace last season, and Detroit went 36-29 to the under.
- Watch: Duren's early touches against Robinson.
- Watch: Boston's turnover count at halftime.
- Watch: whether Detroit's new shooters get clean looks.
