Anaheim Ducks vs Calgary Flames prediction: Ducks' red-hot finishing faces a back-to-back test in Calgary

Anaheim scores on nearly everything and stops almost nothing, and on no rest it faces a Flames team that can't buy a goal.

Quick take
  • Expect a game the Ducks try to tilt with skill and the power play, while Calgary leans on shot volume and home ice.
  • Watch Anaheim's power play, 2nd in the league, against a Flames penalty kill that ranks 9th.
  • Calgary is a -125 favorite with the total at 6.5; Anaheim's games are 9-7 to the over this season.

Anaheim's all-or-nothing hockey

The Ducks arrive in Calgary on a three-game winning streak, and the way they're winning is unusual. Anaheim scores 3.69 goals per game (6th of 32) while putting just 24.6 shots on goal (29th). The gap is closed by finishing: the Ducks convert 15.0% of their shots, 2nd in the league.

The other end is the problem. Anaheim's team save percentage sits at 86.0%, 31st, and the Ducks allow 3.81 goals per game, 30th. That's how a team ends up in a 6-7 loss to Buffalo one week and a 5-4 win at Edmonton the next. Thursday's game in Edmonton fit the pattern: Sennecke's goal made it 5-2 early in the third, and the Oilers still pulled within one.

Calgary is the opposite case. The Flames outshoot the Ducks on a per-game basis at 27.9 shots (11th), yet they convert only 8.7%, dead last. Sixteen games is a small sample, and shooting percentages that extreme tend to drift back toward the middle. For one night, though, the question is whether Calgary's volume can finally beat a struggling Ducks goalie.

Goalies under pressure

Lukas Dostal is the probable starter for Anaheim, with Laurent Brossoit having started Thursday's win in Edmonton. Neither team has confirmed its starter. Dostal has a .872 save percentage and a 3.56 goals-against average this season, numbers that explain why the Ducks have had to outscore people.

Dustin Wolf is expected to start for Calgary. His season line is no better: an .870 save percentage and a 3.71 GAA. But Wolf has picked up since Devin Cooley went on injured reserve, going 2-0-1 in three starts since Cooley got hurt. Cooley had been the Flames' steadier goalie, at a .914 save percentage, and his absence thins Calgary's goalie depth.

The rest edge belongs to the Flames. Calgary last played Wednesday in Seattle, a 1-2 overtime loss, while Anaheim is playing the second night of a back-to-back.

Special teams favor the Ducks

Anaheim's power play converts 36.2% of its chances (power-play goals per opportunity), 2nd in the NHL, and the Ducks draw 3.62 power plays per game, 4th. Calgary's penalty kill is a real counter at 84.0%, 9th.

The catch is Anaheim's discipline. The Ducks are shorthanded 4.06 times per game, 30th, and rank last in penalty minutes. That hands chances to a Flames power play clicking at 29.7%, 4th. Calgary's issue is getting there: the Flames draw just 2.31 power plays per game, 31st. If Anaheim stays out of the box, the special-teams math favors the visitors.

Calgary's thinned-out lineup

The Flames are missing Jonathan Huberdeau (hip), Samuel Honzek (lower body) and Connor Zary (knee). Brennan Othmann (upper body) was listed day-to-day as of Thursday. Mikael Backlund is also listed day-to-day, though projected lines have him centering Joel Farabee and Matt Coronato. Farabee leads Calgary with 15 points.

Anaheim's injured reserve includes A.J. Greer and Troy Terry. Terry was described as getting close to playing in an Oct. 31 update, but not imminently. The Ducks' top end is intact: Leo Carlsson has 24 points in 16 games, and Cutter Gauthier has 11 goals.

What the market is saying

Calgary is a -125 moneyline favorite, with Anaheim at +105, and the Flames are -1.5 on the puck line. Neither the puck line nor the 6.5 total has moved since our feed first saw the game. Pricing the Flames as favorites despite the worse record reflects home ice, where Calgary is 5-3-0, and the Ducks' back-to-back.

The total carries the sharpest tension. Anaheim's games are 9-7 to the over, and every Ducks game in their recent results went over 6.5. Calgary's games run the other way, 7-9 to the over. The teams split two October meetings, each winning 4-2 on the road.
