Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 2, 10:01 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Ohio leans on the run, Akron's turnover habit tilts field position, and the question is margin, not winner.
  • Ohio's offensive line, 12th in line yards per carry, against an Akron front that ranks 117th in line yards allowed.
  • Our number makes Ohio a 13.3-point favorite, a hair past the market's 12.5, with a fair total matching 49.5.

Where Ohio wins this

Ohio hasn't been 4-0 in MAC play since 1997, and the Bobcats got there by running. They average 192.4 rushing yards per game, 29th nationally. The engine is the line: Ohio gains 3.43 line yards per carry (the rushing yards credited to blocking up front), 12th in FBS.

Akron's run defense is where that matters most. The Zips allow 185.6 rushing yards per game, 118th, and rank 124th in rushing EPA allowed (expected points added per play, a measure of how much each snap helps or hurts the scoreboard). They give up 3.18 line yards per carry, 117th, and their stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, sits 95th at 17.1%. Our projection has Ohio running for 228 yards.

The carries spread out. Duncan Brune has three rushing touchdowns over the last three games, Victor Rosa has averaged 6.9 yards per carry in that span, and quarterback Nick Poulos has 203 rushing yards in his five games. This fits a pattern we have tested across two seasons: when a favorite covers, its rushing tends to go over its line. If Ohio covers, it will most likely be on the ground.

Roggow behind a shaky wall

Cibastian Broughton started Akron's first three games before hurting his knee at Minnesota, and he has been listed day to day. Sophomore Brayden Roggow is the presumptive starter, and the numbers show how hard his job has been. He has thrown 7 touchdowns against 10 interceptions, including four picks at Miami (OH). Akron gives the ball away 2.0 times per game, 134th in FBS.

The protection doesn't help. Akron allows 2.75 sacks per game, 118th, and a havoc rate of 19.4% (the share of plays ending in a tackle for loss, sack, forced fumble, interception or pass breakup), 135th. Ohio's defense makes 6.5 tackles for loss per game, 23rd, and linebacker Michael Molnar has four sacks over the last three games.

One catch: Ohio doesn't convert pressure into turnovers. The Bobcats force 0.75 takeaways per game, 121st. Akron's giveaway habit and Ohio's soft hands make turnovers the swing factor for the spread.

The schedule behind 6-2

Ohio's recent form looks dominant. Over the last three games the Bobcats scored 34.3 points and allowed 13.7 per game. Look at the opponents, though: Central Michigan, FCS Sacramento State and Eastern Michigan. The FBS teams Ohio has played carry an average SP+ of -11.5, a softer slate than Akron's -6.1.

That matters against the number. Ohio is 3-4-1 against the spread. It needed a late finish to beat Kent State 13-10 and failed to cover 11.5 in a 24-20 escape against Eastern Michigan, a game saved by a 100-yard kickoff return from Darren James-Hamilton and four goal-line stops. The offense moves methodically, 31st in success rate (the share of plays that keep it on schedule) but 119th in explosiveness. Teams that win slowly tend to win by less. Ohio's 19th-ranked third-down rate of 49.0% keeps drives alive, but long drives also burn the clock that a double-digit cover needs.

Hidden yards favor the visitors

Akron starts its drives at its own 25.4-yard line on average, 135th in FBS, and its net punting of 36.3 yards ranks 126th. Ohio averages 31.4 yards per kick return, sixth nationally, so even Akron's scores can hand the Bobcats a short field. The Zips have also made only 7 of 12 field goals.

Akron has lost six straight and comes off a bye, and both teams have had 10 days to prepare. Ohio is chasing its eighth straight win in the series, the 34th meeting between the programs.

The market and our number

Books opened Ohio at 11.5 and moved to 12.5, toward the Bobcats. Our model lands at 13.27, projecting 31.4 to 18.1, with a fair total of 49.5 that matches the market exactly. It gives Akron a 20.0% chance to win outright. For the first half, our fair line is Ohio by 7.03.

  • Ohio's rushing total against a 118th-ranked run defense
  • Roggow's interceptions against a defense that rarely forces turnovers
  • Akron's field position after Ohio kickoffs and punts
