Buffalo Bulls vs Miami (OH) RedHawks prediction: Messiah Burch's hot streak runs into Miami's stingiest unit
Buffalo's offense is essentially one running back, and Miami (OH) stops the run as well as any defense in the country outside the top 15.
| Spread | Miami (OH) -6.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 45 |
- Buffalo tries to grind with Burch into a top-15 run defense; Miami leans on Heavner's legs and explosive plays to pull away late.
- Messiah Burch against a Miami front allowing 2.57 line yards per carry, 15th nationally.
- Our number matches the market almost exactly: Miami by 6.49 with a 45.07 total, against Miami -6.5 and 45.
Burch carries everything
Two 5-3 teams, both 3-1 in the MAC, play on a Tuesday night in Oxford, and one of them has almost no way to move the ball except handing it to one player. Messiah Burch has 845 rushing yards at 5.6 per carry, and he's getting hotter: 493 yards over Buffalo's last three games. Against Bowling Green he carried 33 times for 184 yards and three touchdowns.
The rest of the Buffalo offense barely moves. The Bulls rank 137th of 138 in yards per play and 134th in success rate (the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule). Even the run game is thinner than Burch's totals suggest. Buffalo's line produces 2.84 line yards per carry (a measure of push up front), 108th nationally.
That is the collision Tuesday. Miami allows 97.1 rushing yards per game, 15th nationally, and holds opponents to 2.57 line yards per carry, also 15th. The RedHawks stuff 22.8% of runs at or behind the line, 23rd. If Burch is stuck at three yards a carry by halftime, Buffalo has no second plan that works.
The opening Buffalo can't use
Miami's weakness sits exactly where Buffalo is weakest. The RedHawks give up 269.9 passing yards per game, 132nd, and rank 114th in passing EPA allowed (expected points added per play).
Jason Wright has not been the quarterback to exploit that. He is completing 49.7% of his passes at 5.3 yards per attempt, and his last three games came in at 5.0 per attempt. Chance Morrow leads the team with 41 catches and six touchdowns, but he has just 83 yards over the last three games. Clint Walker has become the red-zone option, with three touchdowns in that stretch.
Protection is the other worry. Buffalo allows 2.25 sacks per game, 96th, and Roosevelt Andrews III has 3.5 sacks in his last three games. Long-yardage downs are where Wright's accuracy problems show up most.
Heavner's offense now
David McComb is expected to miss the rest of the season. He was averaging 10.9 yards per attempt in four games, and Miami's offense no longer looks like that. Caleb Heavner makes his fifth start, running a quarterback-run spread. He took a hard hit in the third quarter at Central Michigan and returned without missing time.
Miami still hits big plays. The RedHawks rank 6th in explosiveness and 28th in rushing EPA. The down-to-down work lags: Miami ranks 96th in success rate and 100th on third down.
The ground matchup favors the home side. Buffalo ranks 101st in line yards allowed and 108th in stuff rate, so Heavner and Rodney Nelson, who is averaging 7.0 yards per carry over the last three games, should find room. Miami's projection calls for 153 rushing yards.
Hidden yards and a soft schedule
Miami protects the ball, with 0.88 turnovers per game (26th), while Buffalo coughs it up 1.5 times a game, 103rd. The RedHawks also start drives at their own 32, 15th nationally. Those edges keep a modest offense in front.
The caveat is that Miami's winning streak came against little. Its last four opponents rank 131st, 114th, 136th and 128th in SP+, and Miami went 1-3 against the spread in those games, losing to Bowling Green and winning twice by a single point. Buffalo covered three of its last four and pushed the other. Miami's red-zone defense is also a soft spot, allowing 4.02 points per scoring opportunity, 112th.
What our numbers say
The line opened at Miami -6.5 and hasn't moved, with the total at 45. Our model lands in the same spot: Miami by 6.49 with a 45.07 total, and a 66% chance the RedHawks win. For the first half it makes Miami a 3.5-point favorite with a total of 23.49.
One tested pattern fits the game script. When favorites cover, their rushing totals tend to go over, which lines up with Miami's run game against a soft Buffalo front.
