Kennesaw State Owls vs Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders prediction: Kennesaw State's Rickie Collins Gets His Shot at FBS's Softest Run Front

Middle Tennessee is a short home favorite despite the worst line-of-scrimmage defense in the country, and the Owls' quarterback-run offense is built to test it.

Quick take
  • A grinding, close Wednesday game: both offenses move in short gains, both defenses fail to finish plays behind the line, and the kicking game could tip it.
  • Kennesaw State's quarterback-run spread against a Middle Tennessee front ranked 138th of 138 in line yards allowed per carry.
  • Our number makes Middle Tennessee a 2.8-point favorite with a fair total of 49.4, essentially where the market sits.

The Softest Front in FBS

Middle Tennessee is 4-3, has won two straight in conference play and is favored at home. None of that hides what happens when opponents run at the Blue Raiders. They allow 3.61 line yards per carry (a measure of how far the offensive line pushes the run before the back is on his own), dead last of 138 FBS teams. Their stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, sits 129th, and their havoc rate ranks 136th.

That is the opening for Kennesaw State, which runs a quarterback-run spread around Rickie Collins. He has 295 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns this season, the Owls' most dangerous ground threat. The catch is that Kennesaw State rarely breaks anything: its explosiveness ranks 134th. The Owls move on schedule (a 43.2% success rate, 68th) and then stall. Against this front, long methodical drives are realistic. Whether they end in touchdowns is the question.

Terrence Brown Jr. Arrives

Middle Tennessee's own run game found a new gear at FIU. Terrence Brown Jr. carried 18 times for 158 yards in the 26-23 win and has averaged 7.3 yards per carry this season, well ahead of lead back Antonio Martin's 5.1.

Kennesaw State's run defense gives him room. The Owls rank 96th in line yards allowed and 80th in rushing EPA allowed (expected points added per play, or how much each play helps the offense score). They also barely touch the quarterback, with sacks per game ranking 134th. Roman Gagliano, who has 12 touchdown passes against two interceptions, should have a clean pocket behind a line that ranks 13th in sacks allowed.

One tested pattern fits the favorite's path here: when the favorite covers, its rushing goes over its line 33.9% of the time, against 25.3% if the two were unrelated. If Middle Tennessee wins by a field goal or more, Brown is the likely reason.

Third Downs and Hidden Yards

Middle Tennessee's offense has one glaring flaw. It converts 25.6% of third downs, 137th nationally. It survives by protecting the ball, averaging 0.57 turnovers per game (seventh), and by flipping the field: its punter averages 49.2 yards gross, fourth in FBS.

That punting faces a Kennesaw State offense already starting deep. The Owls' average drive begins at their own 25.4-yard line, 133rd, and their punt return game ranks 132nd. Stack those together and Kennesaw State needs long fields every time. Even its finishing carries risk: the Owls have made 85.7% of extra points, 135th, in a series where the last two meetings were decided by 9 and 8 points and a missed kick can swing a cover.

Which Team Is Actually Better

The ratings argue the records are misleading. Kennesaw State is 112th in SP+; Middle Tennessee is 129th. The Owls have faced the tougher slate, with an average opponent SP+ of -1.1 against -5.6 for the Blue Raiders. Kennesaw State has lost three of its last four by three points or fewer, including a 27-26 loss to Jacksonville State, a team that beat Middle Tennessee 23-13.

Recent form complicates the picture. Kennesaw State fell 34-6 to Liberty last Thursday, and Collins threw four interceptions over his last three games, including two in a 124-yard night against the Flames. Middle Tennessee has allowed 36.0 points per game over its last three, a stretch that includes a 55-0 loss at Kansas. The Owls are also on a shorter turnaround, with six days of rest to the hosts' eight, and still chasing their first conference win.

Where the Number Lands

Middle Tennessee opened at -3.5 and has drifted to -2.5, with the move toward Kennesaw State. The total sits at 49.5 across 19 books. The Blue Raiders are 5-2 against the spread; the Owls are 4-3.

Our model makes it Middle Tennessee by 2.84 with a fair total of 49.42, projecting a 26.1 to 23.3 final and a 57% home win probability. The market has already found that number. For the first half, our fair line is nearly a pick'em at Middle Tennessee -0.37 with a 25.54 total.

Key players

  • Rickie Collins (Kennesaw State): Leads the Owls' run game with 295 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns, but has thrown four interceptions over his last three games.
  • Brayden Munroe (Kennesaw State): His 159-yard game against Jacksonville State shows the big-play ceiling an offense ranked 134th in explosiveness badly needs.
  • Tywon Christopher (Kennesaw State): Has 55 tackles this season and will be busy against a Middle Tennessee ground game led by Brown.
  • Terrence Brown Jr. (Middle Tennessee): Ran for 158 yards on 18 carries at FIU and averages 7.3 yards per carry this season.
  • Roman Gagliano (Middle Tennessee): Has 12 touchdown passes against two interceptions, the core of an offense that ranks seventh in fewest turnovers.
  • Cam'Ron Lacy (Middle Tennessee): The Blue Raiders' top target with 41 catches for 437 yards and four touchdowns.
  • Korey Smith (Middle Tennessee): Leads the defense with 61 tackles for a front that ranks last in line yards allowed.
