James Madison Dukes vs Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles prediction: Southern Miss can't stop the run, and JMU needs Pettaway back
A sliding James Madison team gets the worst run defense on its schedule on a Thursday night in Hattiesburg, if it has the back to exploit it.
| Spread | James Madison -14 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 55.5 |
- JMU should lean on the ground game against a Southern Miss front that gives up yards in bunches, while the Golden Eagles struggle to throw.
- JMU's rushing attack, 23rd nationally, against a Southern Miss run defense ranked 136th of 138 in yards allowed.
- Our model makes it JMU by about 14, right on the market, with a projected score near 35-20.5.
Where the Dukes run free
James Madison lost twice in a row in overtime and slid out of the Sun Belt East lead and the playoff conversation. Its best way back runs straight through Southern Miss, which owns one of the worst run defenses in the country.
The Golden Eagles allow 223.4 rushing yards per game, 136th of 138. The problem starts up front: they give up 3.21 line yards per carry (yardage credited to the blockers), 123rd, and stop runners at or behind the line on only 16.1% of carries, 109th. JMU runs for 202.0 yards per game, 23rd, and our projection has the Dukes rushing for 266 on Thursday.
The catch is George Pettaway. He has 824 yards at 6.6 per carry, but a lower-body injury kept him out against Troy, and there is no update for this week. His backup, Nick Herman, managed 15 yards on 7 carries in that game, a 24-21 overtime loss. With Pettaway, this matchup looks like a runaway. Without him, JMU's ground game becomes a question.
One tested pattern fits here: when the favorite covers, its rushing total goes over 33.9% of the time, against 25.3% if the two were unrelated.
Lyddy can't stretch the field
Southern Miss can run the ball, but its passing game has stalled. The Golden Eagles rank 127th in passing EPA (expected points added per play) and 133rd on third down at 30.9%.
Lyddy's recent form is the reason. Landy Lyddy has averaged 4.9 yards per attempt over his last three games, with 4.3 in each of the past two. Ethan Hampton did not play at UL Monroe and could still win the job back in November, but no Thursday starter has been named.
JMU's pass defense allows 235.4 yards per game, 103rd, but that reflects volume more than damage. On a per-play basis the Dukes rank 34th in passing EPA allowed and 18th overall in EPA allowed. Southern Miss will also be without receiver Jaylen Himes, who misses his sixth straight game with a foot injury. The home offense's real hope is Steven Robinson and Jamarice Wilder, who rushed for 380 and 267 yards over the last three games against a JMU run defense ranked 17th in rushing EPA allowed.
A favorite in a funk
The Dukes were 7-0 before losing at App State and then at home to Troy, falling short as a 17.5-point favorite. Their offense has cooled: EPA per play over the last three games sits at 0.103, about half the season mark of 0.212. Camden Coleman threw 3 interceptions in that span, and he and JC Evans have been splitting snaps with no confirmed starter for Thursday. Billy Napier took criticism for his late-game decisions against Troy.
Schedule cuts both ways. This is JMU's third straight Thursday game, so the Dukes have a normal 7 days of rest. Southern Miss gets 5 after its win at UL Monroe. Neither team has played a demanding slate, but the rating gap is wide: JMU is 29th in SP+ and Southern Miss is 126th.
Hidden yards favor JMU
Field position is a quiet JMU strength. The Dukes start drives at their own 33.5 on average, 5th in the country, helped by a kick return average of 35.4 yards, 2nd. Southern Miss has gone 4/9 on field goals, 135th, so its drives that stall in range often come away empty.
JMU gives some of that back through penalties, at 73.4 yards per game, 124th. That habit can keep an underdog's drives alive.
Where the number lands
The market has JMU by 14, unchanged since it opened, with a total of 55.5. Our fair line is 14.44 and our total is 55.5, so there is no real disagreement. The model gives Southern Miss an 18.0% chance to win. JMU is 6-3 against the spread this season but failed to cover three of its last four. Pettaway's status is the news that could move this line before kickoff.
