Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 31, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • North Texas leans on White early, Tayven Jackson punishes stacked boxes, and FAU's pass-only offense has to keep up on the scoreboard.
  • Jahiem White, 7.8 yards per carry over three games, against an FAU defense allowing 258.3 rushing yards per game.
  • Our model makes North Texas a 13.15-point favorite against an 11.5-point market line, with a fair total of 70.5.

The run game decides it

Florida Atlantic arrives one win from bowl eligibility, with a national ESPN audience watching and a defense that cannot stop the run. The Owls allow 258.3 rushing yards per game, 137th of 138 FBS teams. Their rushing EPA allowed (expected points added per play, a measure of how much each run helps the offense) also ranks 137th.

That is a problem against Jahiem White. The North Texas back has 850 yards at 7.3 per carry this season, and he is getting better: 498 yards and four touchdowns over his last three games. He carried 32 times for 219 yards at Tulsa and went for 174 at Navy.

The trench numbers back it up. FAU's stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line, sits at 16.2%, 103rd nationally. Army ran through them in a 56-24 rout. Our projection has North Texas rushing for 248 yards, and nothing in FAU's profile argues for less.

Two passers, one real edge

Both teams call themselves pass-first, up-tempo offenses, but they are not equals. Tayven Jackson averages 9.7 yards per attempt with 18 touchdowns against five interceptions, and he has hit 10.6 yards per attempt over his last three starts. Justin Stevenson is his favorite target lately, with six touchdowns in three games and 209 yards at Navy. FAU's passing EPA allowed ranks 106th, and its pass rush (113th in sacks per game) is unlikely to bother a line that allows 0.86 sacks a game, 10th nationally.

Caden Veltkamp is efficient in his own right: 73.0% completions and 2,082 yards. Easton Messer has 30 catches for 352 yards over the last three, including 14 grabs against Army. North Texas's passing EPA allowed ranks 107th, so Veltkamp will find room. The difference is balance. FAU ranks 117th in rushing yards per game and 109th in line yards, and North Texas's front allows only 2.67 line yards per carry, 35th. The Owls have to do everything through the air.

FAU's hidden-yardage weapon

FAU's best path to an upset runs through special teams. The Owls lead the country in punt return average at 29.3 yards, and North Texas allows 21.5 yards per punt return, 130th of 136. That is a field-position swing waiting to happen. FAU also ranks 13th in kick return average.

North Texas can hit back. It ranks fifth in punt return average, and Dalton Carnes took a punt back 76 yards for a touchdown at Navy. The kicking edge favors the Mean Green: FAU has made only 7 of 11 field goals, so long drives that stall could cost the underdog points it can't spare.

Records that aren't alike

Both teams are 5-2, but they built those records against very different opposition. The FBS teams North Texas has played carry an average SP+ of -0.9; FAU's opponents average -6.0. Their best opponent by SP+ so far was Army, and they lost that one 56-24. A week ago they needed everything to get past Rice 51-49 as 9.5-point favorites, and over their last three games they have allowed 0.386 EPA per play.

North Texas is 3-0 in league play, 5-1-1 against the spread, and has won the last three meetings, including 41-37 in Boca Raton last time. Neal Brown called this a big opportunity, and the Mean Green are playing on ESPN for only the third time in program history.

Where our number lands

The market opened North Texas at -11.5 and hasn't moved across 16 books, with the total at 70.5. Our model is a bit more bullish on the home side, pricing North Texas at -13.15 with a projected score near 41.8 to 28.7 and an 80.0% win probability. It agrees with the market on the total.

The game script fits a tested pattern: when favorites cover, their rushing tends to go over its line, and covering and running travel together. If White gets loose as the matchup suggests, the spread and his yardage likely move together.
