Delaware Blue Hens vs Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders prediction: Delaware's unnamed quarterback should get a clean pocket in Murfreesboro

Middle Tennessee barely touches quarterbacks, which softens Delaware's QB mystery, while Antonio Martin gets an equally soft front to run at.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Oct 17, 10:00 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Expect a low-efficiency grind decided by a handful of drives, with both offenses struggling badly to convert third downs.
  • Antonio Martin against a Delaware run front that ranks 108th in stuff rate is Middle Tennessee's clearest path.
  • Our number makes this nearly even, giving Middle Tennessee a 49.0% win chance, slightly closer than the market's Delaware -1.5.

The quarterback nobody has named

Both teams are 2-3, both are 0-1 in Conference USA, and both are trying to end two-game losing streaks. They do it on a Tuesday night that opens a run of three straight midweek games. Delaware won last year's first league meeting 31-28 and arrives as a narrow road favourite, even though it doesn't know who plays quarterback.

Nick Minicucci hurt his knee at Virginia and missed the 30-14 loss to Liberty. Carty called him week-to-week, and as of Oct. 10 Delaware hadn't named a starter. A healthy Minicucci has been the engine, averaging 8.1 yards per attempt on the season. EJ Archield Jr. started at Liberty and went 10-of-19 for 137 yards across two and a half quarters. Braden Streeter and freshman Tyler Bell also took snaps.

The uncertainty may matter less than usual because Middle Tennessee generates almost no pressure. The Blue Raiders average 0.4 sacks per game, 137th of 138. Their havoc rate, the share of plays with a tackle for loss, sack, takeaway or pass breakup, is 10.2%, dead last. Delaware's line allows havoc on 21.2% of plays, 136th, so this is the gentlest pass rush it will see. Delaware throws for 261.0 yards per game (38th), and Sean Wilson showed the ceiling with 185 yards and two scores against Coastal Carolina.

Delaware's rush against Gagliano

The reverse matchup is less friendly. Delaware averages 3.4 sacks per game, sixth in the country. Blake Matthews has 3.0 of his 4.0 sacks in the last three games. MTSU's line has held up, allowing 1.2 sacks per game (34th). But Roman Gagliano, the expected starter, has faded to 5.7 yards per attempt over his last three. He bottomed out at 9-of-26 for 81 yards in the 55-0 loss at Kansas.

Gagliano's saving grace is ball security. He has thrown one interception all season. MTSU turns it over 0.4 times per game, sixth nationally. Delaware will probably have to manufacture its own takeaways rather than wait for gifts.

Antonio Martin's soft landing

This is where Middle Tennessee can win. Martin has averaged 5.2 yards per carry over his last three games, including 106 yards at Jacksonville State. Delaware's front stops runners at or behind the line on just 15.7% of carries, a stuff rate that ranks 108th. Liberty's Kam Davis ran for 147 yards and two scores against the Blue Hens last time out. Over the last three games, opponents have stayed on schedule on 50.4% of plays against Delaware.

MTSU's own run defense is worse. The Blue Raiders allow 221.6 rushing yards per game, 135th. They give up 3.58 line yards per carry, a measure of how much ground blockers win before the back is touched, which ranks 137th. Delaware isn't built to cash in, though. It runs for 98.8 yards per game, 132nd, and Jo'Nathan Silver has managed 2.8 yards per carry over his last three. Each team faces a run defense it should exploit. Only MTSU has a back in form to do it.

Third downs and hidden yards

Neither offense stays on the field. Delaware converts 29.8% of third downs, 127th nationally. MTSU is worse at 26.8%, 136th. Recent scoring tells the same story: Delaware has averaged 13.0 points over its last three, and MTSU 13.3.

That puts weight on field position, where Middle Tennessee holds a real edge. Its punter averages 49.6 gross yards, sixth in the country. Delaware's averages 40.0, 126th. The Blue Hens have also made only 3 of 5 field goals, which hurts in a game where every drive counts.

A line that flipped

Middle Tennessee opened as a 1.5-point favourite. The market has since moved to Delaware -1.5. The ratings back the move: Delaware sits 118th in SP+, MTSU 129th. Delaware's FBS opponents also carry a tougher average SP+ rating (1.5 against MTSU's -3.2).

Our number lands between the open and the current line. It has Delaware by 0.3 and MTSU winning 49.0% of the time. We project 24.2 points for Delaware and 23.9 for MTSU. Our total of 48.1 sits just under the market's 48.5.

Key players
