High Point Panthers vs Liberty Flames prediction: High Point's rebuilt pressure tests Liberty's brand-new backcourt at midnight
Liberty returns almost none of last season's minutes, and High Point's turnover-hunting defense gets the first look at the Flames' new guards.
| Spread | High Point -7.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 155.5 |
- High Point's depth, size and ball pressure should let it control stretches; Liberty needs the Campbell twins hitting threes to keep pace.
- Cooper and Cobi Campbell against a High Point defense that forced turnovers on 22.3% of possessions last season, 7th nationally.
- High Point is a 7.5-point favorite, up from 7.25; Liberty returns just 10.5% of last season's minutes, the number that clouds everything.
Two rebuilds, one opening tip
College basketball's season starts at midnight in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and the first two teams on the floor barely resemble the clubs that ended last season. High Point went 31-5 and beat Wisconsin as a No. 12 seed. Liberty went 26-8 and won an NIT game. Neither has played anyone yet.
The gap in continuity is the story. High Point returns 31.7% of last season's minutes, thin but workable around preseason Big South Player of the Year Cam'Ron Fletcher. Liberty returns 10.5%. Ritchie McKay's roster has nine new players, and forward Sean Register Jr. is out for the season with an injury, as of a preview from about Oct. 30. Last season's team numbers describe Liberty's system more than the players who will run it.
Liberty's shooting has to travel
Liberty's identity last season was shot-making. The Flames posted an effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) of 60.5%, 3rd in Division I. Most of that firepower left. Brett Decker Jr., who made 47.1% of his threes, is at Baylor, and Kaden Metheny and Colin Porter are gone too.
The replacements come as a set. Cooper Campbell made 39.5% from deep at Troy, and twin brother Cobi hit 40% on a similar volume. If McKay's spacing-heavy offense still works, it will be because those two carry over their shooting from Troy on the first night.
Where possessions get won
High Point's defense lived on takeaways last season. The Panthers forced turnovers on 22.3% of opponent possessions (7th) and ranked 2nd in steal rate. Liberty's offense was just as stubborn about protecting the ball, giving it away on 13.3% of trips, 8th nationally.
That clash favors whoever has more of last year's habits left. Liberty's ball security last season was built on a backcourt that has largely departed. High Point adds Monmouth's Jason Rivera-Torres, a forward who averaged over two steals a game there, to the returning Conrad Martinez. Early-season timing in a new rotation is exactly what pressure punishes.
Size, glass and the line
High Point's minutes-weighted height sits at 77.7 inches against Liberty's 74.9, and that edge shows up in three places. Liberty finished last season 365th in offensive rebound rate, dead last, and returns almost none of its minutes. Second chances will mostly belong to High Point.
The Panthers also got to the line often, ranking 36th in free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) at 41.3%. Liberty's defense was disciplined there, 18th at keeping opponents off the stripe, but that defense also ranked 356th in opponent three-point percentage last season. A smaller, newer Liberty group has to defend without fouling while giving up length inside.
Tempo and the market
High Point is favored by 7.5, up from 7.25 when our feed first saw the game, with the total at 155.5 after opening near 154.75. Both moves are small but point the same way: toward High Point and toward points.
The pace gap explains the total. High Point averaged 71.3 possessions per 40 minutes last season (32nd), while Liberty crawled at 64.6 (319th). Flynn Clayman said his team kept a normal sleep schedule rather than preparing specially for the midnight start. Whichever coach sets the tempo with a rebuilt rotation likely decides both the side and the total.
