Orlando Magic vs Phoenix Suns prediction: Phoenix's last-ranked defense gets a Banchero-less Magic offense

Orlando can't score and Phoenix can't stop anyone, and the Suns are playing on the second night of a back-to-back.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 5, 6:00 PM ET.

Quick take
  • A grind decided by Orlando's shooting: the Magic score poorly, while Phoenix allows more per possession than any team in the league.
  • Desmond Bane and Orlando's three-point volume against a Suns defense allowing 40.3% from deep, 29th in the league.
  • Phoenix is a 1-point favorite with a 223.5 total, both unmoved. The Suns are 0-6 against the spread and 5-1 to the over.

A defense with no floor

Both teams are in a hole. Phoenix is 1-5 and riding a four-game skid. Orlando is 2-5 and still winless at home. Only one of these teams has a problem that looks structural, and it's the one at home.

The Suns allow 121.7 points per 100 possessions, last of 30, a year after their defense ranked 9th. Orlando's issue sits at the other end. Its offense produces 104.9 points per 100 possessions, 25th in the league, and its 105.7 points per game ranks 29th. The Magic's scoring drought runs straight into the softest defense in the league.

Who scores for Orlando now

The drought has a cause. Paolo Banchero, who averaged 22.2 points last season, has been out since late October with a right high ankle sprain and is listed with a Nov. 22 return. Jalen Suggs (right knee bone bruise) and Jonathan Isaac (knee) are also out. Both are listed to return Nov. 10.

This isn't a roster in transition: 90.6% of last season's minutes are back. The missing pieces are injured, not traded. That pushes more onto Desmond Bane and Tristan da Silva, who made 37.4% of his threes last season. Anthony Black (ankle) is off the injury report after sitting Monday for maintenance. He averaged 15.0 points last season. Nikola Vucevic gives Orlando a scoring big; he averaged 15.1 points for Chicago last season. Franz Wagner left the preseason finale with shoulder soreness but is not on the current injury report.

Threes against a sieve

Orlando hunts the three. Its 3-point attempt rate of 46.9% ranks 7th-most in the league, though the Magic are hitting only 34.3%. Phoenix is the right opponent for that shot profile. Opponents are making 40.3% from deep against the Suns, 29th in the league.

Bane is the shooter to watch. He made 39.1% of 427 attempts last season. Phoenix has shooting of its own: Collin Gillespie made 40.1% on 578 tries last season, and newcomer Luke Kennard made 47.8% for Atlanta.

Possessions Orlando gives away

The Suns' one defensive strength targets Orlando's biggest leak. The Magic turn the ball over on 17.1% of possessions, 26th, and Phoenix forces turnovers at 16.5%, 7th. Live-ball giveaways would let the Suns run on tired legs instead of defending in the half court.

The glass is less clear-cut. Phoenix ranks 30th in defensive rebounding, but Orlando grabs only 22.9% of its misses, 27th, so the Magic aren't built to punish that weakness.

Second night, thin frontcourt

Phoenix lost 132-119 to Portland on Wednesday and plays again on Thursday. Orlando has had three days off and opens a four-game West Coast trip here. Jordan Goodwin (calf) and Rasheer Fleming (ankle) both missed Wednesday and are day-to-day. Mark Williams is out until February after shoulder surgery. Rookie Khaman Maluach started at center against Portland alongside Devin Booker, Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks and Miles Bridges. Coach Jordan Ott said he might go deeper into his bench because of the absences.

A line that barely leans

The market has Phoenix at -1 with a 223.5 total, and neither number has moved since our feed first saw the game. The Suns haven't covered a single time in six tries, and five of their six games went over. Orlando is 2-5 against the spread. The Magic's last two games, losses to Boston and Washington, both stayed under.

Last season's meetings were tight: Phoenix won 113-110 at home, and Orlando won 115-111 in Orlando.
