Cleveland Cavaliers vs Philadelphia 76ers prediction: LeBron's Philadelphia debut runs into the Cavaliers team that swept the Sixers

Cleveland won all four meetings last season, but a rebuilt Philadelphia roster and a shaky Jarrett Allen knee make tonight's opener a different puzzle.

Quick take
  • Expect a Sixers team leaning on new stars and early defense against a Cavaliers offense that returns most of last season's core.
  • Watch Evan Mobley and a possibly shorthanded Cleveland frontcourt against Joel Embiid, with Jarrett Allen questionable.
  • Philadelphia moved from -2.5 to -3.5, despite Cleveland winning all four meetings last season.

A sweep, then a rebuild

Cleveland owned this matchup last season. The Cavaliers went 4-0 against Philadelphia, including a 133-107 rout and a 117-115 escape in two January games in Philadelphia. Tonight's Sixers barely resemble that team.

Philadelphia returns only 55.8% of last season's minutes. The newcomers are the headline: Jaylen Brown averaged 28.7 points for the Celtics last season, and LeBron James put up 20.9 points and 7.2 assists for the Lakers. Tonight is James' home debut in a Sixers uniform, alongside Tyrese Maxey, who scored 28.3 a night last season, and Embiid, who was not on the injury report.

Cleveland changed less. The Cavaliers bring back 68.7% of last season's minutes, so their team numbers from a year ago still mean something. Darius Garland is now with the Clippers and James Harden arrives from them, while Dean Wade, a Cavalier for seven seasons, now suits up for Philadelphia. This is Cleveland's season opener; the Sixers already have a game in their legs.

Who protects the rim

Both teams have injuries up front, and that may decide the game. Jarrett Allen was listed as questionable with a right knee issue on Oct. 21, and Khalifa Diop is out. Nae'Qwan Tomlin is sidelined for several weeks with a lower back stress reaction. If Allen sits, Mario Hezonja figures to absorb more minutes, and Mobley carries the paint alone.

Allen matters because he is so efficient: he shot 63.8% from the field last season. Without him, Cleveland's interior scoring loses its cleanest finisher against Embiid.

Philadelphia's depth took hits too. Dominick Barlow will miss at least two weeks with a lumbar spine bone stress response, Ariel Hukporti is out for the season with a ruptured Achilles, and Tacko Fall is out. Wade is questionable with an ankle sprain after sitting the opener. Nurse said Sunday that Wade was "still a little sore," and his status remains unsettled. Adem Bona was cleared for the opener and is not on the latest report.

Cleveland's guards against a new defense

The Cavaliers' offense was the engine of that sweep. They scored 116.1 points per 100 possessions last season, 5th of 30, and made 57.8% of their two-pointers, 2nd in the league. Donovan Mitchell (27.9 points per game last season) and Harden, who averaged 23.6 points and 8.0 assists for the Clippers, give them two creators who can bend any defense.

Philadelphia's answer came in its opener. The Sixers won 106-100 at New York and held the Knicks to 39.3% on two-pointers, the best mark in the league after one night. Their own shooting lagged: they made just 27.5% from three.

Cleveland's weak spot is the perimeter. Opponents shot 37.2% from three against the Cavaliers last season, 26th of 30. Brown, Maxey and Anfernee Simons will test that early.

Where the line sits

Our feed first saw Philadelphia at -2.5; the Sixers are now -3.5 across 11 books, with the home moneyline at -155. The total has nudged from 234.75 to 235.5.

The Sixers covered as 4.5-point underdogs in New York, and that game stayed under its total. Cleveland went 27-37 against the spread last season, a mark that shadows a team that won plenty but rarely beat expectations. The market is betting on the new Philadelphia stars over last season's head-to-head results.
