Calgary Flames vs Seattle Kraken prediction: Flames' power play takes aim at Seattle's 30th-ranked penalty kill

Quick take
  • Expect a loose, high-event game: both defenses rank 27th or worse in goals allowed, and neither probable goalie has been sharp.
  • Calgary's power play (30.6%) against Seattle's penalty kill (64.1%) is the matchup most likely to swing this rematch.
  • Seattle is a -136 home favorite. The total slid to 6.0 even though Kraken games have gone over 11 times in 14.

Calgary's power play edge

Five nights ago in Calgary, the Flames turned a tight game into a 6-2 rout. Matt Coronato piled up a career-high four points, and Kraken coach Lane Lambert called the last two periods "the worst 40 minutes I've been a part of since I got here." Now Seattle gets the rematch at Climate Pledge Arena, rested and stung.

The clearest mismatch is on special teams. Calgary's power play converts 30.6% of its chances (power-play goals per opportunity), 5th in the league. Seattle's penalty kill stops only 64.1% of opponents' power plays, 30th of 32.

The catch is volume. The Flames draw just 2.4 power plays a game, 31st in the league, and the Kraken rarely go shorthanded. Seattle's discipline is the only thing standing between that penalty kill and real damage.

Two shaky creases

Dustin Wolf is Calgary's probable starter, and he has struggled. He carries a .862 save percentage and a 3.94 goals-against average this season. Devin Cooley, the better of the two so far, is on injured reserve with a lower-body injury and was listed week-to-week as of Nov 2, so the net looks like Wolf's.

Philipp Grubauer is listed as Seattle's probable starter, but nothing is confirmed, and Lambert has been splitting starts with Joey Daccord. Grubauer sits at .886; Daccord is at .880. Neither option has given Seattle much, which helps explain why the Kraken allow 3.71 goals a game, 29th in the league.

Seattle finishes, Calgary doesn't

The Kraken win in an unusual way. They put only 25.2 shots on goal a game, 28th, and own just a 45.1% shot share (their portion of all shots in their games), 29th. Yet they score 3.57 goals a game, 7th, because they bury chances: their 14.2% shooting ranks 3rd. Frederick Gaudreau has seven goals on 16 shots.

Calgary is the reverse. The Flames shoot 9.0%, 31st of 32, and score 2.53 goals a game. Over a stretch this short, shooting luck can swing hard in either direction, so neither number is destiny. Watch the opening period too: Seattle leads the league in first-period goals per game.

Bodies missing on both sides

Seattle remains without Jared McCann (lower body), Ryan Lindgren (upper body) and Jacob Melanson (chest), with Jake O'Brien (lower body) also on injured reserve. Curtis Douglas (upper body) is day-to-day.

Calgary is missing Jonathan Huberdeau (hip), Samuel Honzek (lower body), Connor Zary (knee surgery) and Cooley. Brennan Othmann (upper body) missed games on Oct 30 and Oct 31; the latest listings have him as day-to-day, so his status for tonight is unsettled.

What the market sees

Seattle is a -136 moneyline favorite with Calgary at +115, and the Kraken are -1.5 on the puck line. The total first showed up in our feed at 6.25 and has dipped to 6.0, a lean toward the under.

That runs against Seattle's season: Kraken games have gone over 11 times in 14. Calgary has been more balanced at 7-8 on totals. Venue matters here as well, with the Flames just 2-5-0 on the road. Last season, Seattle won both meetings, 5-1 in Calgary and 4-1 at home.
