James Madison Dukes vs Appalachian State Mountaineers prediction: Singleton's ankle and Pettaway's legs frame JMU's unbeaten trip to Boone
App State may be without its starting quarterback just as James Madison's ground game hits full stride, and the hidden yardage leans the same way.
| Spread | James Madison -12.5 |
|---|
- JMU leans on Pettaway and field position to build a lead; App State needs explosive passing to stay within the number.
- Singleton's ankle: if he can't go, an App State offense already sputtering in October loses its best passer.
- Our model makes JMU about a 12-point favorite, slightly more than the market's 10.5, with the total right at 58.
The ankle that shapes everything
James Madison arrives in Boone at 7-0, scoring 42.9 points per game. App State hosts a sold-out Kidd Brewer Stadium without knowing who will play quarterback. That uncertainty, set against a Dukes ground game in full stride, frames Thursday night.
Malachi Singleton is questionable with an ankle injury, and a final call is expected closer to kickoff. He tried to play through it at Coastal Carolina, looked hobbled, and gave way to Henry Hasselbeck after halftime. App State rallied from a double-digit deficit to win, with Hasselbeck running 21 times for 125 yards.
Singleton's season line is strong: 8.5 yards per attempt and only two interceptions. October has been rougher. He went 5 of 23 for 72 yards in a 10-3 home loss to Old Dominion, a game App State was favored to win. Over the last three games, the Mountaineers' offense has produced -0.029 EPA per play (expected points added; below zero means plays are losing ground) and a 38.2% success rate, the share of plays that keep an offense on schedule.
The run game offers little cover. App State ranks 101st in line yards per carry, a measure of what the blockers create, and running back J'Marion Burnette is also questionable. Our projection gives the Mountaineers just 70 rushing yards.
Pettaway's October tear
George Pettaway has run for 476 yards over his last three games. That works out to 9.7 yards a carry, peaking with 206 yards against Marshall. JMU averages 223.6 rushing yards per game, 14th in FBS, behind a line that ranks 22nd in line yards per carry.
App State's best counter is its stuff rate, the share of runs stopped at or behind the line: 22.7%, 25th nationally. Disrupting the backfield is the Mountaineers' path to forcing Camden Coleman into obvious passing downs. That path is narrow. JMU allows havoc (tackles for loss, sacks, turnovers and breakups) on just 10.4% of plays, 13th, and App State ranks 100th in sacks per game.
Coleman has thrown 13 touchdowns against one interception, and JC Evans still rotates in. "We'll just keep evaluating what we see," Billy Napier said. The ground game fits a tested pattern: when favorites cover, their rushing tends to go over its line, and our projection has JMU at 225 rushing yards.
Cracks in the Dukes' defense
JMU's season defense looks excellent, 18th in EPA allowed. The last three games tell a different story. Against Marshall, Georgia Southern and Georgia State, opponents posted 0.185 EPA per play and a 48.0% success rate. Georgia Southern nearly pulled the upset in a 27-24 game, the Dukes' only non-cover this season.
The soft spot is the secondary. JMU allows 236.4 passing yards per game, 103rd in FBS. App State throws for 267.7 per game, and Sam Pickett III leads the way with 411 yards and four touchdowns. If Singleton plays and stays upright, this is where App State can trade scores.
Neither record was built against much. JMU's FBS opponents average -5.9 in SP+, and App State's average -10.4. JMU also comes in on five days of rest after a Saturday win.
Hidden yards tilt to JMU
JMU's average drive starts at its own 33.9-yard line, 4th in the country, and the return game explains much of it. The Dukes average 35.4 yards per kick return, while App State ranks 112th in kick returns allowed. The Mountaineers get little back the other way, ranking 128th in punt return average.
JMU finishes, too, going 6-for-6 in the red zone against Georgia State. Its one sloppy habit is penalties: 71.1 yards per game, 119th, the kind of drag that can keep a home underdog close.
Where the number lands
JMU opened as a 10.5-point favorite and hasn't moved across 18 books, with the total at 58. Our model makes it JMU by about 12, roughly 35-23, and gives App State a 22% chance to win outright. The total matches the market almost exactly.
The series has swung wildly. JMU won 58-10 last season, and App State won 34-20 in Boone the year before. The Dukes carry a run of 12 straight Sun Belt regular-season wins into The Rock.

| JMU starting field position | 33.9 | Average starting yard line, 4th in FBS, powered by a top-five kick return unit. |
| App State stuff rate | 22.7% | Ranks 25th and is the Mountaineers' best tool for slowing Pettaway. |
